Rhoda Walsh is a well-known bridge teacher and professional bridge player from California. She did her undergraduate studies in Theatre Arts and English at UCLA, and she is a graduate of Loyola Law School. She practiced law for many years, all while pursuing a successful bridge career.
Rhoda is an ACBL Grand Life Master with over 20,000 Masterpoints. She is also a World Bridge Federation (WBF) World Master. In addition, Rhoda is a co-developer of the most popular bridge system played in the world today, namely, Two-Over-One, formerly known as the “Walsh System”.
In teams-of-four competition, Rhoda earned a bronze medal with the 1968 USA Women in the quadrennial World Team Olympiad. In the same year, she also won all three major women's North American Bridge Championships: the Wagar Women's Knockout Teams and both pairs tournaments, the Whitehead and Smith, playing with two different partners. In total, Rhoda has won twelve National North American Bridge Championships, as well as numerous Second Place National finishes. She has represented the U.S. in six World Championships. She is a two-time winner of the annual Whitehead Women's Pairs, inaugurated 1930, playing with Hermine Baron in 1968 and with Kerri Sanborn in 1972. She is a three-time winner of the annual Smith Life Master Women's Pairs, playing with Dorothy Talmage in 1968, Amalya Kearse in 1972, and Sabine Zenkel in 1989. Five major championships for women pairs, with five different partners. She won the major pairs championship for seniors, Leventritt Silver Ribbon Pairs, in 2000 playing with Charles Coon. She also won two National North American Swiss Teams, playing one with a student, and the other with Grant Baze, Benito Garozzo, and his wife, Lea Dupont.
These days, Rhoda can be found providing thoughtful analysis of Richard Pavlicek's and John Swanson's nightly games on BBO [BBO name: rhodaw]. She plays professionally with her advanced students in tournaments throughout the U.S., and she trains all levels of students on BBO. She can also be seen playing on BBO and in top flights of ACBL tournaments with fellow World Class partners.
